Pretty high price to pay just to prove how tough you are.
If your sick go to the doctor. Your life isn't worth it.

Those symptoms should have triggered a trip to the doctor. The list should be posted in every locker room.

My son was a wrestler many years ago in high school. He had to pull out of the state championship because he had developed mono. My guess is he was sick with mono prior to that time, but the symptoms didn't manifest until that match. He was sick as a dog, adenoids swollen big time along with his spleen. To this day, I'm amazed that it didn't rupture. I know the wrestlers all shared water bottles and I think is where he picked up the virus. And Todd, this is not a stupid story, you are.

This insensitive and idiotic coach--who obviously just cares about winning--should be fired.

Some adult in his life should have noticed his symptoms and took him to see a doctor. I feel like a lot of people in his life were putting the sport ahead of his well being.

I can't imagine anyone with mono playing a rough game like hockey - I also can't believe the coach didn't pull him out of the game. He must have seen how sick he was.

My condolences to the family and friends of the victim, but his death should not have happened. My daughter had mono when she was in the ninth grade. She was extremely ill and could hardly walk from her bed to the bathroom. From the sounds of what was going on with this boy, there is no way he should have been playing hockey or any other sport. Yes, teenagers really think they are indestructible, but with everyone around him, friends and adults, knowing he was so sick, someone should have stepped up and refused to let him play, and strongly (very strongly) urged that he seek medical attention.

A doctor I went to see while ill with all the symptoms of mono, diagnosed me with nervousness, and prescribed Valium. Every morning I would get up, take a shower, take a Valium, and within an hour would be would be soaking wet with sweat and zombie-like and have to go back to bed. I had to drop out of college. Thankfully, I was taken to another doctor, who correctly diagnosed my symptoms.

Remy insisted, however, that he would persevere through the pain and sickness even if he wasn’t feeling well.

"He was excited to play. We love our guys to be aggressive and to go out there and compete hard, and he never had a problem competing," said Al Dorich, head coach of the Chicago Fury.

Just one of the problems with organized sports. These kids are taught to "walk it off" when they should be under a doctor's care.

Why did he play that last game instead of getting medical help? If his teammates knew he was in pain, didn't the coach also know he was in pain?

Sports before well being and life. Sad.

Ok. This is truly a stupid story.
