All 5 kids left alive should be prosecuted for auto burglary in juvenile court, while a 75-year-old who shot the 6th dead child ought to stand trial for murder. Deadly force is not justified to protect mere property. And this killer had no real fear for his own life or safety nor his wife at 1:15 am when they lie in bed with no light to see by and pitch-black sky outside near his driveway. Beside that, both are safe behind locked doors with a lot of time to dial 911 instead of firing 1 shot at dark alleged car burglars. PUHLEEZE! Get real!

Oh, I forgot! This IS the real criminal 'just-us' system's raw deal.
    Sad but true...

They just need somebody to give them a job. They're all going to be doctors, lawyers, the President, and somebody's neighbor. Glad at least one of them was euthanized. Saved taxed workers a few thousand $.

Felony murder charges in Illinois for minors can get complicated.

The law is pretty clear for people 18 years or older.

Here's a novel concept... don't commit crimes and your chances of going to jail or ending up shot by angry homeowners will decrease significantly. Sorry.. but no sympathy here

These teens are extremely lucky. I hope they realize they now have a second chance at life, and take advantage of it.

"They then fled on foot but were later caught, telling detectives that they didn't stop the vehicle because "they didn't want to go back to jail," Nerheim said."

BACK to jail? At ages 16-18?

  • Marjori

Guaranteed those sweet teens are laughing their butts off right now and can't wait to get back to their crime sprees.

This Diamond is seriously tarnished. As for her criminal friends, the lustre of youth and innocence wore off a long, long time ago. They will never shine in the light of Society. The only appraisal they will ever receive, will come from police files, prisons or funeral parlors.

the should be required to have counseling, training in behavior management and the should learn a job, as well the should be encouraged to take college classes whilst imprisonmed. the have to become better people, better than their parents, and the have to feel better about themselves. an relapse into crime should be punished to the fullest extent of law

i feel the 18 r old should be tried as a juvenile too, and that intervention programs while the kids are incarcerated are important, vital, as it sounded like the'd been imprisoned before - and it clearl did not help them clean up their act. The 18 ear old should have a long enough sentence to be rehabilitated and to have learned a job skill, as should all of them. the worriesome part is that there was a knife in their vehicle. the oung people must not have good parenting, judging b the look of the 18 ear old.

I say give them a taste of prison, then put them in halfway houses with strict requirements for drug testing, community service, and either gainful employment or education/job training. If they can't keep their noses clean, it's back to the big house. After literally dodging bullets, maybe one or two of them will decide on a different path.

  • c0reDump

    Charge them with burglary: YES.
    Charge them with murder? Stupid

  • todd

So, Why were the charges dropped ?...African American Privilege ???...Just like Jussie.

  • Graphic

Sure, just let them go. They all have records and continue their lives of crime. They'll do more damage down the road.

Good call, Mr. Prosecutor. You recognize that accountability should never attach to felonious activity. Here in California you get to kill two men and nearly kill a third before Lady Justice even lifts an eyebrow. Too bad Ed Buck wasn't an Illinoisan.

  • First Last

They need to encounter more armed homeowners.

  • BluntNotPC

5 to 10 and they'll be out killing again.

  • RedSoxPatriotsCelticsBruinsFan

The senior is alive because of that gun. Kid most likely was approaching with the 10 inch knife. Lucky they werent all killed, the senior wouldnt have been wrong either.

This is an example why the large cities are filled with criminals who repeatedly get released with short or no sentences. But the advocates who push for criminal justice reform will see this as a victory. Soon one of these vermin will prey on the public again. It is just a matter of time.

  • h5mind

Be glad this didn't happen in the UK- over here they would be charging the homeowner with murder for "employing disproportionate force". Yes, it really is that crazy.

  • RubberBanned

"they didn't want to go back to jail,"

There would have been an easier way for them to do that.

    Don't commit any more crimes.

  • DontBotherMe

"If they choose to continue to follow the troubled path they are currently on, it will end in only one of two ways – either with another tragic funeral or with more involvement with the criminal justice system."

Before I got to the end of the article and read this I was thinking that unless they do something else with their lives they will suffer either of these fates.

    Good shot old man

  • rgcook2003

I hope these people realize the mighty gift they have been handed and use to turn their lives around.

Murder is a stretch when it was one of the kids who got shot. I was skeptical that the charge would get anywhere, but who even knows with the way the courts work these days.
