President Trump rules out trying to expand Supreme Court as Democrats rally behind the idea

All due respect to the Democrats, but even I think this a terrible idea. We already have 9 justices on the SCOTUS. Adding more will just make things worse, not better. Democrats are better off to just hope and pray that no more justices retire, giving Trump and the GOP even more chances to tip the SCOTUS more to the right.

Of the 9 current Justices, Trump appointed 2, Obama appointed 2, Bush Jr appointed 2, Clinton appointed 2 and Bush Sr 1. Why are people so concerned about Trump? Reagan appointed 4.

Here is an idea. Both sides get to choose a judge, and set the number on SCOTUS to 11. And agree it cannot be changed for at least 70 years. There are good arguments to be made for more justices on the court due to the workload in the modern era.

That will never happen though. Makes too much sense. And too many opportunities to take unfair advantage in a hyper partisan political environment.

  • HadEnoughYet

why do democrats think that is an appealing idea?

Giving corporations the same rights as persons in Citizen's United (which actually means more rights than persons) was the worst SCOTUS decision in a long time. If this cannot be overturned, and the only other alternatives are a Constitutional Amendment, removing those justices or diluting the current court? Hmmmm. Tough call. For me anyway. There are legitimate reasons for more than 9 justices, but that is literally opening a Pandora's box and good luck closing it again. Than again, Mitch McConnell weaponized the Supreme Court appointment process.

Just one more example of how screwed up my country has become these days.

Nobody is asking Trump to bless the idea. It’s to depoliticize and unwind the inhumane stacking of the Court as proven by their completely asinine ruling today.

  • HomerIsBlind

Increasing the number of Justices will only serve to further politicize the High Court, what we need is greater judicial impartiality, magnifying and exacerbating partisan divisions within the Courts is the last thing we should be doing.

When the democrats eventually have the majority again the republicans would welcome the likes of Merrick Garland, but that ship has sailed.

I'd go for 10. That would require a two-judge difference in decision instead of one.

  • Dukedaddy

The Democrats played this all wrong. They should have declared they are dead set against expanding the Supreme Court. That way Trump would have done every thing in is powers to get it expanded.

  • IndependentThinking

FDR tried or wanted to do the same thing.

  • Pro-Marx

Why have SCOTUS at all? Let's just put every case up for a popular vote. You could vote online./s

The Democrats now want to expand the Supreme Court and change the Electoral college. Sounds like losers wanting to change the rules after losing. If Hillary had won you wouldn't being hearing any of this stuff.

  • colloguy

In theory there should be no reason to stack a court.
It should be a mater of people who interpret the laws of the US, the constitution and make cases for or against based on rigorous review of information.
People who are trying to appoint and stack the courts are the problem in the first place.

  • Prophet With Honor

I am going to assume Democrats won't try this until they control the WH and have better numbers in the Senate.

  • Robert Eric Oberlies

He lost the chance to do it last January ... for the time being. If he wins re-election, with the House again, he would.
Historically, the US has done it 4 times I think; reducing the Court through vacancy once.

There you go - if you want to get Trump not to do something, just tell him the Democrats want it.

  • What?

Drumpf and Mitch have the founding fathers spinning in their graves.

  • subtext9

Maybe just lawfully (new or existing laws) remove all Supreme Court Justices nominated* by Trump, if and when he is lawfully removed from office.

    *thanks.

  • BassPlyr73 Again

I have to agree with Trump on this one.

Packing the court would be dumb. The next time the other party is in office they will do the same, and so on, and so on, back and forth, and pretty soon we would have a bench of 100+Justices that would start to look like the Senate.

  • Verity Pendleton

The only way to fix the court is to make sure that the GOP is voted down IN THE SENATE. They should NEVER be allowed to gain power in the senate as most of them are corrupt and see party before country. The fact that they confirmed a known sexual abuser is proof enough. Now, let's hope the current investigation into Kavanaugh removes him from the bench.

Beto, I want to vote for you. Please refrain from idiotic statements such as expanding SCOTUS or supporting the Green New Deal. Thanks.
