Those might be good corporate locations, but they're foolish places to put warehouses. Lower-traffic crossroads like in Hazleton or Carlisle PA (i-81 & I-78/80/76) and the Triangle (i-40 / i -85) in North Carolina would be better for their shipping interests.

Both NYC and northern Virginia are rush-hour nightmares; UPS even had to stop promising next-day delivery from NC to DC because of the morning traffic bogging down their daily trailer truck (feeder) shipments because I-95N becomes a parking lot starting at 4am (and 2pm going the other way).

Many companies find it advantageous to go to underdeveloped areas and train a workforce that wants JOBS rather than "positions".

  • Rod Strongo

Giving such a prosperous company tax breaks and incentives... let them pay their own way.

I used to live in Northern Va. They will not be happy with the increased traffic. The roads are already ridiculous there.

The moral of story, graduate from college with at least a BA (maybe a BS might be better).

NY and VA...who else is shocked that Amazon would choose locations with well-educated, diverse populations instead of, say, rural Alabama or Kentucky or Oklahoma?

  • Troyal

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is picking a fight with Amazon. But she also doesn't understand how economics work. This should be interesting.

High paying white collar jobs go to the Blue states, and the blue collar jobs labor intensive goes to Red states. Matches the type of people in those states. Jeff is smart to not put 50K highly skilled jobs where there are no skilled people.

I smart move by Amazon. I mean where else are they going to go? Alabama? Nebraska? Indiana? Florida? The answer to that is quite frankly... HELL NO! Amazon needs smart, competent and cultured people to fill out the positions. These very same people are not prone to find living in a community full of young Earthers and people who hate immigrants, particularly appealing.

What a sham they put every large city in these last 3 years. I live in a minor major city, they could have made the city I am in. How typical. Now they will have to pay an average programmer $150,000 instead of where I live of $80,000. I would say this was the least modern, progressive pick.

Congrats to NYC, Virginia and DC.

Even for NY and DC 50,000 jobs ave 150k a year is no joke.

Great For Amazon, NY and Virginia,, Bezos, someone Trump is always trying to talk bad about sets up shop in Democratic Blue NY and Purple Virginia.. now they can create Thousands of Jobs which pay a lot of Taxes willingly to help all those failing Red States Getting Federal Welfare paid by those two states.. LOL

  • Dukedaddy

One thing for sure.... Trump will criticise Amazon. No matter what Amazon decision was, Trump would find a reason to bash Bazos.

Government again showing bad judgment. They have given Amazon $2.2B in tax incentives. For 50,000 jobs that is equal to $44,000 per job given away. I suppose they felt they had to do it but many cities have gone bankrupt making similar deals.

The commuters who suffer the parkway and route 1 trip through Alexandria to Crystal City, then into DC via the 14th Street Bridge will curse Amazon and the additional traffic/congestion every workday. Sorry about that Crystal City!

2 places I have no interest in living. Not good choices.

  • virgillionhere

I hope they plan on riding drones to work in crystal city. 50000 more cars there, lol

This is what happens when someone comes up with the bright idea of a "head tax". Honestly, I'm kinda surprised it's not correlated in the article.

  • sg

The big question: What incentives do the taxpayers have to provide to get this headquarters?

  • Prophet With Honor

Amazon made it tough. Many areas could offer what they asked for...with the exception of a designated International Airport. It would be easy to convert a National upwards with the help of Amazon.
    They narrowed the field.

So I am confused. They will have three HQs? Or one in Seattle, 1/4th in NYC and 1/4th in VA? Why is this so complicated?
