Please require the dairy industry to label their products clearly: "Product of a sexually violated bull and raped cow whose newborn baby was stolen, causing mother & child tremendous grief and stress."

The phrase "almond mik" (or "almand mylk" as the 14th century cookbook The Forme of Cury spells it) has been around for hundreds of years longer than the United States. Likewise the Chinese term "豆漿" that literally translates into "soy milk".

Of course, bribery dates back even further, and that's how we get dairy manufacturers defining language.

Consumers aren't idiots. We know that almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, etc. are not the same as cow milk and don't have the same nutritional benefits. To be honest, people have been using almond milk since the 13th century - you can find references to almond milk and almond cream in English recipes dating that far back! It was used as a substitute for cow milk on Lenten days when you weren't allowed to have animal products (which were observed a lot more then than they are now).

Oh my gosh ...stop the madness. What an utter waste of time. The government subsidized dairy industry is really grasping at straws, if they think consumers are so stupid they don't understand the difference between an animal's milk and nut milk. There is no shoving that genie back in the bottle. Times have changed and so have consumers. Maybe, people would prefer to live a more compassionate life and unclog their arteries at the same time.

Does this mean that I wasted my money buying that herd of Magnesia?

  • Thomas

Every non-dairy product I see in the stores is clearly labeled as to the source.

The average consumer of these products is not stupid, and tends to read labels. The real problem is that so many people are going dairy-free. The dairy industry has an over-supply. So, don't produce so much if that's a problem.

milk. noun. : a white liquid produced by a woman to feed her baby or by female animals to feed their young; especially : milk from cows or goats that is used as food by people. : a white liquid produced by a plant.

personally the idea of ingesting the hormone and pus deluged secretions of animals to be rather disgusting.

I drink the Almond "milk" and love it. Call it whatever you want, I don't care, I'll buy it because I like it. It's all about money. Different industries competing for our dollar, each wanting an advantage.... I work in the advertising industry, the stories I can tell.

  • Jeff Noel

There are several appetizing synonym nouns for "drink" that could be applied: Nectar. Potion, Beverage, Refreshment, etc. Regardless of what word they are forced to use, the general public will see it in the dairy case and still call it Milk-- and those of us allergic to nuts and legumes will continue to call it a Carton of Death.

    What about Baby Oil?

  • Nanda Kumar Das

The FDA says eggs are dairy, almonds etc as milk should be no problem.

  • Danny Douglas

How about just mandating those product be something like: MILK LIKE, or SOY PRODUCT. And, by the way, NO small print. Half the people dont care, and the other half cant read to start with.

  • Prospero

it's juice... plain and simple. these products contain no milk.

  • Feudal Yeoman

We can only HOPE that Dairy Farmers will FINALLY WAKE UP and rename their boring old product CisMilk, clearing the way for all of the non-lactating varieties. Really, who are these so-called Dairy Farmers to quash the HOPES and DREAMS of almonds and coconuts and whatnot? #Resist #DownWithDairy #MilkPride

What a waste of resources. The FDA has better ways to spend their time and our money - like working on ways to keep E-Coli out of our salads. Do they really think there are people in this country who don't know soybeans and almonds are not animals? I wonder if they'll make Milk of Magnesia change its name. Magnesium sure isn't a lactating animal either.

  • David Hoffman

Peanut butter needs to be renamed ground peanut spread. Almond "milk" needs to be renamed "almond juice cocktail" since it has so many added chemical ingredients.

  • Yokwyk

" Almonds don't lactate. Neither do soybeans or coconuts for that matter. "

The 1st sentence, of this article.

Really, is there anymore we need to know ?

  • Dicazi

"Just Mayo" is an outright lie. Mayo is short for mayonnaise and it has eggs in it.
Soy milk or almond milk ids what's in it. Soy or almond liquid to be used like milk.

  • Bill Lum

Just another dying industry's last ditch effort at a government bailout. Research the dairy industry's practices and then tell me with a clear conscious that you support the treatment of those sentient beings.

Milk from an animal other than humans is cancerous and detrimental to your health. Yet the government who supports this industry continues to push the propaganda of it being healthy... Drink up, sheep.

  • anastasiabeaverhousen

"...consumers should not be misled that these products have the same nutrition as real milk, yogurt, cheese and other actual dairy products."

I agree. They are, for the most part, far more nutritious and healthful than dairy/cow milk (which, imo, is how cow milk should be labeled...and other "milks" labeled according to their ingredients...no-one is going to be confused).

  • Prophet With Honor

My gawd, milk is milk...oil or juice is something else. Call it what it really is and move on.

  • Th3OnlyOn3

No, no it is not. But of course, almond juice isn't nearly as appetizing sounding to consumers which could hurt sales, therefore the government will declare it milk, but may throw a gimme to the dairy industry by putting a requirement in very small print to add "non-dairy milk product" or something along those lines.
