    Vindication at last.

The police released the video today showing another car making a left directly in front of VW causing her to have to stop. She was then T-boned by the elderly couple when trying to get out of the intersection.

I'm really surprised that she was issued a violation. As I saw on TV, she was already in the intersection on a green light, behind traffic when the light turned red and unfortunately got left in the middle. I see this happen every day. I believe the person in the intersection has the right of way. The couple should have approached with caution before entering the intersection noting what was going on.
I feel sorry for the victim and his wife but I think they are partially responsible.

But this is the part of the law that I feel is the most unfair. If this same accident happened but instead of hitting a wealthy woman (VW), they hit someone who was poor with no insurance, then they would have no hope of recovery except from their own insurance. So the 78 year old man whose life may in the VW case be considered worth a million or so, would be considered worth nothing in my hypothetical. How fair is that to either VW or the victim?

Anyone posting here present when it happened?

Probably best for Venus Williams to settle out of court and move on. A check for $15,000 easy for a pro athlete.

Took some digging, but always search the local news rather than Big Media.

The driver of the small car "told police she was westbound on Northlake. She slowed for a red light but preceeded when the light turned green."

In other words, she was traveling at the posted 55MPH, tapped her brake when she saw she had a red light ahead of her, but goosed it the second it turned green--just as VW's SUV was crossing her path.

This all occurred at 1PM on a Friday afternoon. VW was crossing 6 lanes of highway traffic from one community to her home community. The other highway traffic stopped at the red light obscured VW's view of the speeding car, and likewise, the stopped traffic obscured the small car's view of the Giant Sequoia SUV crossing the road.

The lawsuit states that Jerome Barson's injuries included "severed main arteries, massive internal bleeding, a fractured spine, and massive internal organ damage." He was in the ICU when he died on June 22, which, the lawsuit says, was Linda Barson's 68th birthday. About 2 weeks after the accident. His wife's injuries included, per the lawsuit, a cracked sternum and shattered right arm. She also broke her right wrist, hand and several fingers. The police will not release the video. It doesn't seem like Venus was going 5 mph.

Jez lady. You killed someone. Pay what they want and consider yourself lucky to not be in jail. But for goodness sake, stop whinging and whining.

What a gracious apology she made for causing someone's death through her negligence...

It's great that Wimbledon was so sympathetic to HER plight.

Prison time maybe ...probably....take a break from tennis ....

Can't find my original post, as I was going to edit it... I guess Venus wasn't stopped, she entered the intersection on a Red light, and drove into the path of the other car who had already had a green light.... Still feel bad for all involved....

  • APrider

I feel bad for her.. I can't understand how she could be 100% at fault when her car apparently was stopped?? Didn't the other driver see that there was a vehicle in her path? And I believe the $15,000 is just to determine which court will hear the case. Doesn't mean that is the amount they are seeking..Just that it is an amount greater than $15K.. What attorney is going to file a suit against someone like Venus ( has money ) for only $15,000?

If what I hear is true, that the man wasn't wearing his seat belt and she had a history of speeding tickets, then that would limit the liability. He might still be alive if he were wearing his seatbelt
